George born in in Gastard in 1890 to George and Ellen (née Shepherd). In 1891 George senior was recorded as being a general labourer living with his wife and children Annie, Ellen and George.
In 1908, aged only 18, George married Eva Ellen Webb. By 1911, they had a daughter Nellie and were living as a family in Gastard. They had another three daughters – Winifred, Elsie and Lillian – before George enlisted in the Army Service Corps in Chippenham in 1916. His Attestation Papers record that he was living at 2 Bradford Road, Corsham and was a learner driver with a rubber company.
George served in both France and Belgium and saw action on the Battle of the Somme. He was discharged due to ill health in July 1918 and died in November of the same year. He was 28 years old.
His daughter Lillian died in 1921, aged only seven, and was buried in the same grave.
